EVANSVILLE HOME TALENT BASEBALL WINS FIVE STRAIGHT

On Sunday, June 22nd Evansville Jays hosted Utica Association in a Southeast Section Home Talent baseball game at the high school's Stan Sperry Field. Evansville continued their winning ways by beating Utica 5 to 3 to extend their current Sunday League winning streak to 5 games. Evansville is now in first place of the Southeast Section West Division with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss. Stoughton currently has the same record as Evansville, but the Jays beat Stoughton 5-4 in 10 innings back on Sunday, May 25. With 5 wins already in 2008, the Jays have surpassed their previous record for wins in a season of 4 (2006 & 2007).

The Jays scored first in the bottom of the third inning when Jerod Steindl singled; two outs later Jeremy Rasmussen walked, then Nick Manion reached on an error. Next batter, Brent Cashore, for the second Sunday in a row with the bases loaded and two outs hit a 3 RBI double in the left field gap to clear the bases. Evansville 3 - 0. Later in the same inning Cashore stole third base and later scored on a wild pitch. Evansville 4 - 0.

Evansville scored a run in the bottom of the 4th inning. Brent Cashore reached on an error and later advanced to third base on a base hit by Jake Bronkema. Later in the inning a pitch got away from the Utica catcher, the catcher threw down to third base in an attempt to throw out Cashore, but the ball got past the third baseman to score Cashore. Evansville 5 - 0.

Utica made the game close in the 7th inning when they scored 3 runs on 3 singles and a double. Evansville's relief pitching by Nic Larson and solid defense during the remainder of the game helped preserve the win. Final score Evansville 5 Utica 3. Evansville's current Sunday League record is 5 wins and 1 loss.

Evansville's starting pitcher, Matt Drefahl, once again did a great job. He went 6 and 2/3 innings, striking out 8, walked 2 and scattered 6 hits. Many times Drefahl pitched his way out of jams by striking out a batter for the third out of the inning when Utica was poised to score. For example, in the first inning with Utica runners on first and second, Drefahl struck out the last batter for the third out of the inning. He did it again in the fifth inning with the bases loaded.

Evansville continues their home stand on Thursday, June 26 when they host DeForest for a 7:30 pm Night League game at Leota Park. Sunday, June 29 Evansville (5-1) will play Lake Mills (3-3) at Warner Park after the Mallards 3:05 pm game.
